Job S. Ebenezer replied to Carol Horne's discussion 'UK too reliant on imported food?'
One solution for this problem is to promote urban agriculture using urban waste land such as, root tops, brown fields, unused portion of a parking lot, and many other places where we can grow vegetables and fruits in containers. I have been using…

Do you have your own website, blog, forum or social network?
http://muswellhillbilly.wordpress.com/
what is your website/blog/forum/social network for?
A gardening blog written on behalf of education/conservation charity GardenAfrica.
Anything else? What's your story? Give us a bit of background about yourself (if you like. Or just write something that proves you are a real person and not spamming)
I'm a nature-loving foodie, interested in conservation and international development. I have a personal interest in South Africa.

I write a gardening blog for a fantastic charity called GardenAfrica. (GardenAfrica trains people in Sub Saharan Africa to plant vegetable gardens to feed their families. A 100sq metre garden can feed a family of 5 for a year).

We grow vegetables in our London garden - tomatoes, asparagus, herbs, lettuce, peppers, leeks, garlic, onions, beans, peas, squash, cucumber, raspberries, apples, figs, strawberries, parsnips and cabbage.

I'm also an intenet geek and love the idea of information being freely shared among people all over the world.

Raised vegetable beds made from glass bottles

How:

Just dig a small trench and sink the bottles upside down to just below the bottom of the necks. You will need a lot of bottles!

There are several advantages to planting vegetables in raised beds:

* You can control the soil that goes in each bed (raised beds allow a wider… Continue

Pots watered by gravity

Auto Pots are plant driven systems that automatically provide water and nutrients to your plant as required using only gravity (no pumps!!). Very simply, you pot your plant up in a suitable growing medium, such as Coco, Coco/Soil (50/50) Mix or Perlite and then connect the AutoPak to a reservoir of your choosing. The SmartValve contained within each AutoPot governs the level of water fed to each plant and actually replicates the ideal… Continue
